RARE! Bottom Marked and Dated 1918! Hand Glazed! Antique US Department of the Navy Fine China Serving Dish or Receiving Plate for Senior Officers, Captain's Mess, or Admirals. Museum Quality Condition!

Originally made as a small serving side dish and as a teaspoon or serving spoon caddy, but also doubled or re-purposed as a visitors "receiving plate" which was always located at the front entrance foyer of the private quarters of all Naval Officers where official visitors to the residence could leave their calling card. Not leaving a calling card was an actionable or punishable offense in the late 19th and early 20th century. This is a Great Naval Officer Promotion Gift, Wedding Gift, or Navy Retirement Gift
