Super HUGE All Wood Dome Top Antique Trunk - Incredible Woodworking Craftsmanship! Exterior Canvas and Interior paper were removed, wood scrubbed with bleach/water solution, and hand sanded. Satin Spar Varnish Applied Inside and Out. New leather handles. All Matching Hardware Wire Brushed and Black Japanned. Unique to this trunk is the leather trim and TWO LIFT OUT TRAYS. Top Lift Out Tray Folds Up Into The Lid and Has a Smaller Liftable Tray. Original Document Pouch in Lid!! Heavy Duty Front Latches and FOUR Rear Hinges All Matching Design! Non working lock with Patent Dates: Oct 2, 1888, April 3, 1884 and March 2 1888. A Nice and Tight All Wooden 19th Century Trunk with a Great Patina and Lots of Character. - #238

Super Huge Dome Top Antique Steamer Trunk - #238
UNIQUE and RARE!!! Beautifully restored all wood Dome Top with lots of intricate matching hardware and beautiful leather trim. Lock is non-working but with Oct 2 1888, April 3 1884 and March 2 1888 Patent Dates!. The trunk has been finished in a rich honey brown patina complementing the black of the hardware and leather. New leather handles. A flat satin spar varnish was applied inside and out to preserve and bring out the grain in the wood along with UV protection
This is a nice tight, beautifully restored trunk with Heavy Duty front latches and rear hinges! Has TWO Original Lift Out Trays! Top Tray lifts up into the lid and also has a liftable tray!! First of these we have seen! Read about them but never seen!

The Pirate's Lair Exclusive!
We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value.

However the truth of the matter is that the majority of these trunks were made towards the middle to end of the 19th century just at the dawning of the industrial revolution here in America when there were no child labor laws or protections. This rare photo clearly illustrates at least 3 generations of owners and workers, ages appearing to range from pre-teen/adolescent, teens/early adult, through middle to old age!
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown.

Note the adolescent factory workers on top row! Note that there are no women in the photo! This is due to the fact that at that time "proper" women did not work outside of the home, certainly not in a factory. Everybody appears to look pretty stern, having on their arms crossed and "work" faces put on.
