Traditional all metal dome top design with plenty of solid hardware. Beautiful 100+ year old pine was revealed on the inside after removing the paper. Metal exterior was originally finished in black japanning and a bright gold both of which oxidized over time. In restoring the exterior metal all metal surfaces were lightly sanded and japanning on the oak straps was completely removed. Then a light swipe of red oak stain was applied to both the gold-finished metal and oak straps along with a black walnut stain applied to metal trim. Two coats of spar varnish were applied to both interior and exterior surfaces so as to provide UV and wood treatment protection which also allows the natural patina and character of the wood grain and metal surfaces to show. We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
