Beautifully restored all wood classic dome top antique trunk! Exterior was originally covered in canvas and the interior covered in paper both of which was removed, revealing wood scrubbed and sanded to a beautiful natural patina. Dated hardware, square nails, and tin body sections were lightly sanded and then restored in a contrasting black and brass finish. Original leather handles were far too deteriorated to save which were removed and replaced. A detailed "Makers Mark" lithograph in a black triangular shape indicating it was manufactured by the S.H.R. & Co but most intriguing is the creature depicted appearing to be the body of a bison or buffalo but the fantasy head of a tasmanian devil! Original Lithographs, Dated Hardware March 16, 1880, Lift Out Tray, Working Lock and Key finish this trunk off! |

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
