| RARE All Wood Six (6) Plank Construction! Ca 1870s Fully Restored Solid Dome Top Antique Trunk with 1850-1860 Features of Oak Wood Handles and Oak Wood Half Slats! All hardware including the securing bands and brass headed tacks/nails show depth and character, and have a fantastic dark brown oxidized patina. The pine wood body and oak slats were done in a mahogany finish. Working Lock but no key. Exterior originally covered in leather which was removed along with the interior paper lining, then scrubbed with a bleach/water solution, dried and lightly sanded. The two coats of Spar Varnish were applied to all exterior and interior surfaces. Of significance was the ability to have saved the original and beautifully detailed Victorian Lithograph of a gentleman and a horse in a 19th century large wheeled racing carriage. |

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
