Folks, another one-of-a-kind! The restored antique trunk you have been waiting for.
The 120-130+ year old seasoned and cured pine planks and oak wood slats are stunning with a fantastic patina and character that only well seasoned antique wood can achieve! With Lots of Great Hardware Cleaned and Polished.
Original Victorian Lithographs are found on the underside of the dome top lid along with a hidden compartment! All lithographs have been professionally sealed to prevent deterioration and loss of color.
The exterior of this antique trunk was originally covered in hand tooled leather which in and of itself indicated that this was a high-end trunk in its day. The leather needed to be removed during the restoration during which the beautiful pine wood was revealed which the leather was protecting.
The oak slats as well as all of the hardware had layers and years of grit, grime, original black japanning, and oxidation all of which were removed, surfaces sanded and hardware polished revealing the beautiful designs found in the cast iron hardware and grain on the wide oak wood slats.
The interior of the trunk was covered in a thin plain paper some of which can still be found inside the litfout tray and under the dometop lid. This covering was carefully removed to reveal the beautiful 100+ year old cured and seasoned pine wood. The pine wood was then scrubbed with a "green" cleaning solution removing the old glue and century old grit, let dried, and then gently sanded to further reveal grain and character of the seasoned pine wood.
All of the original heavy-duty cast iron patent dated hardware (October 23, 1877) was carefully cleaned of the grit, oxidation and black japanning, then sanded and polished revealing the detailed designs and patent dates. This hardware contrasted against the blackened sheet metal and mahagony finish of the wood looks fantastic!!
This fully functional, solidly constructed, and substantial antique trunk for sale has the rare combination of both rarity and rugged beauty with plenty of character in its 120 to 130 year history!.
A high end trunk in its day, it was originally constructed using extra thick planked pine wood for the body, heavy duty cast iron clamps and hinges, secured using extra heavy duty capped square nails with caps, and a VERY unique working lock AND key!
Finally, three coats of protective spar varnish was then applied to the exterior surfaces to enhance and bring forth all of the character of both pine and oak woods and the polished hardware so as to allow for another 120+ years of service! Spar varnish has UV ray protection from the sun in the event the trunk is put into a well lit room. Also has well known penetrating wood treatment properties and is actually still used to protect wood and brightwork from salt and water exposure on ships and boats at sea.
When dried it leaves an an extremely hard resistive and waterproof surface while also offering great depth and dimension to the underlying surface.

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
