Rare and Unique, One-of-a-Kind! 19th Century Small Spirit Cup Made From Ox Bone and Scrimshaw Carved by a Sailor aboard the USS Decatur Sloop of War 1839-1865. Beautifully Detailed Workmanship in Typical Naval Tradition!

Some forever unknown 19th Century sailor fashioned a small two-shot spirit cup (2.5" high x 1.75" wide) out of Ox bone and then as a tribute to the ship he was on, the USS Decatur, had painstakingly and in great detail scrimshawed his ship on the front and the name "Sloop Decatur" on the rear.

A fantastic piece of American Naval history. Spirit cups typically held one or two shots of whiskey, rum, or some other strong liquor and were used by the enlisted American sailor for his traditional daily "tot" in the early to mid 19th century. Perfect Condition - Museum Quality/Investment Grade. This 19th Century handcrafted Spirit Cup while rare in and of itself was made by an American sailor stationed aboard the USS Decatur, a Sloop of War sometime between 1839 when bought by the US Navy to 1865 when she was decommissioned from service and sold. She saw active duty during the Mexican War in 1847, sailed both Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and acted as a floating defense during the Civil War guarding San Francisco Bay
