ca 1880s-1890s Silverplated Candlesticks with USN and Anchor ca 1880s-1890s Silverplated Candlesticks with USN and Anchor

Above two photographs show a pair of US Navy silverplated tabletop candlesticks used in an officers mess measuring 9.5" x 5.25" each weighing almost 4lbs. They are large and bottom heavy with a low center of gravity so as to prevent sliding and tipping over during rough seas. Note the stylized initials USN and Anchor as the insignia which was commonly found from the Civil War 1860's thru to the early/mid 1890's.

These US Navy candlesticks were certainly used prior to and shortly after the US Navy first introduced electricty aboard its ships beginning in 1893 and tested on the USS Trenton. The silverplated candlestick to the left has been polished and the one to the right showing the tarnish as it was received. These candlesticks are unmarked insofar as manufacturer which inhibits being able to specifically date the pieces.

However this particular pattern of candlestick and naval insignia has been produced by Gorham Silver Company and some of these were electrified perhaps to keep them in-service after electricity was introduced aboard ship, or used at shore facilities. A pair of these recently (1/02/2012) sold on Ebay Auction #280796279677 for $1000. Asking price here is $800. for the pair, Click here to Review

ca 1880s-1890s Silverplated Candlesticks with USN and Anchor

Above shows a closeup of the stylized intials USN and Anchor insignia. Again, this type of US Navy stylized insiginia was commonly used during the Civil War 1860s thru to the very late 1890's and very early 1900's. There are many dated US Navy articles of equipment and dinnerware using the stylized intials as shown so as to substantiate the stated date range. This stylized insignia, mostly without the anchor, was replaced in the very late 1890's to early 1900's with the initials USN in clear scripted text with periods placed mid high in between the letters.

ca 1880s-1890s Brass Candlesticks with USN

ca 1880s-1890s Brass Candlesticks with USN
Above are two very large plain brass candlesticks with the initials USN measuring 18" x 7" each weighing almost 5lbs. These brass candlesticks, like the two silverplated ones above, are also very bottom heavy with a low center of gravity so as to prevent sliding and tip during rough seas and certainly were meant to be placed on a dining or mess tabletop. It is unclear the exact age and/or whether these candlesticks were used in the Officers or Enlisted Mess, however the crude and almost rough utilitarian manner in which these candlesticks were made along with the very simple USN lettering may indicate they were used in the enlisted mess. Also, the aged heavy patina of the brass is very similar the the heavy patina found on the brass hilts of US Navy M1860 cutlasses. These were certainly used aboard ship prior to 1893 when the US Navy first introduced electricity aboard its ships.

The above is a personal candlestick holder used for a bedside table in a stateroom or cabin. The insignia is a fouled anchor with the 1890's SpanAmWar/Great White Fleet/WWI era initials USN with periods centered between each initial.

The Pirate's Lair Exclusive!
We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value.

However the truth of the matter is that the majority of these trunks were made towards the middle to end of the 19th century just at the dawning of the industrial revolution here in America when there were no child labor laws or protections. This rare photo clearly illustrates at least 3 generations of owners and workers, ages appearing to range from pre-teen/adolescent, teens/early adult, through middle to old age!
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown.

Note the adolescent factory workers on top row! Note that there are no women in the photo! This is due to the fact that at that time "proper" women did not work outside of the home, certainly not in a factory. Everybody appears to look pretty stern, having on their arms crossed and "work" faces put on.
