Note that the handlettered Mess No5 is right side up so that it can be read when the bowl is sitting on its bottom, as a bowl normally would. However all mid to late 19th century British Royal Navy Mess Basins as they were called, or bowls as we call them, had their Mess No's lettered upside down so that they could be easily read since it was Royal Navy standard procedure that all mess bowls were stacked on each other upside down, or bowl facing down.
Note the floral badge design consisting of the Tudor Rose (England), the Thistle (Scotland) and Shamrock (Ireland) which represented the United Kingdom of Great British, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Note that all 3 plants originate from the same stem which shows the solidarity between these three peoples and entities.
Note that the fouled anchors on this bowl are relatively plain and straightforward while on latter 19th century patterns the anchors are very detailed.
The crown on this mess basin is the same used on all Royal Navy Mess Plates and Bowls during the reign of both Queen Victoria and for a short period after her death during the reign of her son King Edward. Suffice it to say that soley based upon the style of the Crown the earliest we can age this piece is in the late 1830s at the start of Victorias 65 years sitting on the throne.
| Museum Quality Condition! Produced possibly by Bovey Tracey Pottery Co. but it could have been any number of producers, and due to the unique nature of the stencilling it is thought that this mess bowl is early 1830s before Bovey Tracey Pottery was incorporated. Due to the unique nature of this mess bowl we have dedicated a separate web page for a more detailed review. |
