A Study in FAKE and REPRODUCTION US Navy M1860 Naval Cutlass - Warning! Beware of Fakes!
Many of these fakes, especially ones from India, attempt to make their reproductions as close as possible to an authentic cutlass, while others are much less diligent in manufacturing their fakes.

Photographic examples and written text will illustrate and compare both the fakes to the antique originals. There are way too many fakes out there which were made over the years but in general one needs to look at the stamped marks on the ricasso of the blade and the hilt. The letters in the stamped manufacturer and ordinance marks of the originals will all have similar font style and size depending on the particular mark being presented. Nicely formed, deeply stamped marks with text being of the same size and style used for all of the marks is usually a dead giveaway in identifying a fake.

For the most part marks on an original authentic antique cutlass will be weakly stamped, not so deeply stamped as found on a fake. This is especially true of the Ames Mfg Co marks found on the reverse ricasso of the M1860 naval cutlass. The original Ames stamp was very, very light and weak whereas the same stamp on the reproductions is deep and clear.

The font syle and size for each type of mark on the same blade would be slightly different (ie; a manufacturer mark vs. an ordinance mark vs. a date mark). The names and initials of the military inspectors found on many naval cutlasses are well known as to the dates when they worked at that particular manufacturing plant. The marks found on an original will not all be in alignment and neatly stamped, whereas the reproduction will be represented by clearly stamped marks in almost perfect alignment.
