HISTORY ABOUT THE US NAVY COMMISSIONED "PLYMOUTH" MODEL 1861 WHITNEY RIFLE AND NAVY BAYONET:

Commissioned by the US Navy, this musket was first deployed on the ship, USS Plymouth, hence the name. It was developed in parallel with the Army Model 1861 musket, but otherwise followed a very different design.

This musket was designed as single shot .69 cal muzzleloader, iron buttplate, wood stock and lockplate is similar to the army design, bolster is rounded with unique shape eliminating the clean out screw, similar trigger guard but with a tang added, rounded barrel is relatively short and heavy, unusual long range sight, single iron band, iron nose cap doubles as a band, both are held with springs, two strap hooks one on butt and the other on the band, very long bayonet lug is fitted on the nose for a saber bayonet, ramrod has cylinder head with hole for a wiper and is threaded.
The musket was manufactured by Whitney Arms, New Haven Connecticut. This inspector for both the rifle and saber bayonet is Frank C. Warner (FCW) and initials also appear in a cartouche on both the wood and on the bayonets pommel. The saber bayonet is also marked "COLLINS & CO / HARTFORD / CONN" on the ricasso of the blade.
