Note the wooden pegs or dowels and the hardware which are standard construction on all British Royal Navy battle rattles.
Above are two photos illustrating some of the maker marks and government stamps found on some British Royal Navy battle rattles.
Note on the photo to the left the classic Royal Navy "Arrow" or sometimes known as a "crows foot", the number "49" the government inspector or inspection facility , and the capital letter "G" indicating Government inspection.
Note on the photo to the right the stamped moniker of the well known "Army & Navy, CSL, London" (Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd. London) which was started in 1871 to make small military/naval items such as these battle rattles.
