Large size roll top trunk in a light brown-yellow pine finish. Unique front latches which twist lock into place with patent date June 26, 1833. Original hidden compartment in the lid!! Handcrafted Liftout Tray, New Leather Handles and End Caps. Working lock AND key. The exterior canvas has been removed as well as the interior paper covering to reveal the 130 year old wood beneath, which was then scrubbed and sanded. The maker mark paper tag was able to be saved, "F.E. Barnard & Co, Worcester, Mass" along with some Victorian Lithograph design along the edge of the compartment cover. |

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
