All Wood Dome Top Antique Trunk restored in a Rich Cherry Finish, Translucent Blackened Sheet Metal and Contrasting Sanded and Polished Hardware! The Exterior was Originally Covered in Leather which some time in the past was removed and painted a navy gray. Most of the navy gray paint was removed to reveal the preserved pine beneath. The interior was covered in paper which was also carefully removed but left intact the original Victorian Lithograph located in the lid consisting of a montage of birds, a woman in period dress and a beached fishing sail boat. Once the navy gray paint, black japaning and interior paper were removed all of the 100+ year old wood was scrubbed, sanded, and stained with two coats of satin spar varnish being applied to protect the wood and metal surfaces. New leather handles and dark brass end caps, new handcrafted lift out tray, stamped and dated hardware of March 16 1880, working lock AND key! |

A nice solid trunk beautifully restored in a cherry wood finish with polished contrasting hardware. Beautiful and HUGE swirl impressions are left in the wood from the original cutting at the pre-electricity saw mill which give an indication of just how huge these blades and saws were! The Victorian Lithograph is very detailed and a highlight of the trunk. This will be a centerpiece in any room placed! |

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
