Another VERY unique aspect about this particular trunk is that the outside pressed tin design was done in an Army Green faux-canvas finish making it appear and look exactly like a standard trunk covering made of green canvas!!
In fact the faux-canvas covering on this trunk was so absolutely perfect that we initially thought it was canvas and went to remove it, and only then did we notice that it was pressed tin! Also, the "black japaning" on the outside hardware is 98% complete and still shiny and hard - also very rare! A thin film of clear original varnish was also applied to the oak straps to seal them and it is also 98% complete. The oak strap clamps have clear dated hardware, March 1880.
Original Liftout Tray and Victorian Lithograph of a Young Girl in a Civil War Union Blue Army Tunic and Kepi Hat truly complements this "Army Green" Antique Trunk making it a PERFECT Gift for someone in or retired from the Military.
Additionally, along with the lithographs the manufacturer's label was also saved during the inside restoration, "The Reading Trunk Company" which touts themselves as the only trunk company
in Reading, Pa. And when it can't seem to get any better the original owner's name and location is still clearly stenciled on both left and right hand oak slats: "Lillie Reed, Cressona, PA".
Original Lid Lift, Original Lift Out Tray, Saved Lithographs and Maker Label, Dated March 1880 Hardware, Original Owner's Name and Location, Absolutely Perfect and Rare Pressed Tin Faux-Canvas in Army Green, New Leather Handles and End Caps - Makes this a RARE One-of-a-Kind Anqitue Trunk!
All Metal and Wood Dome Top Antique Trunk. Outside left in Original Condition as it was made - Pressed Tin Faux-Canvas in an Army Green! Black japaning on the hardware and clear lacquer on the oak slats at 95%. Original liftout tray, maker label, cute young girl in Civil War Union Blue Tunic and Kepi Hat, dated March 1880 hardware, and original owner's name and location (Lillie Reed, Cressona, PA) make this an absolute one-of-a-kind antique trunk. The only thing done to the exterior was an application of two coats for protective satin spar varnish. The interior was covered in paper which was also carefully removed but left intact the original Victorian Lithograph located in the lid and manufacturer's label was saved |

A nice solid trunk beautifully restored antique trunk left almost in the same condition as when it was first built over 100 years ago. Large swirling impressions left in the wood gives an indication of just how huge these blades and saws were! The Victorian Lithograph is very detailed and a highlight of the trunk and complementary to the "Army Green" faux-canvas pressed tin exterior. |

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
