Fantastic Mid to Large size all wood flat top trunk with LOTS of unique hardware in a golden tone and oak straps on all sides, and Leather Trim on all edges front and back. Exterior of this 100+ year old antique trunk was originally covered in canvas which was removed to reveal the beautiful patina of this 100 year old pine. The oak straps were originally covered in a black japanning which was also removed to reveal the beautiful grain of the wood. The original bottom front leather hold down straps were able to be saved which gives this trunk another level of authenticity. The interior paper was removed with the wood then being scrubbed and sanded. Two coats of spar varnish were applied to both interior and exterior surfaces so as to provide UV and wood treatment protection which also allows the natural patina and character of the wood grain and metal surfaces to show. Lock plate has the manufacturers name: Excelsior Lock Co, Newark, NJ. Handcrafted Lift Out Tray and New Leather Handles were added. Working Lock AND Key!!! |

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
