| This was a high end trunk made for rough transportation and lots of use. Exterior was originally covered in canvas and the interior covered in paper which were both removed to reveal the beautiful patina of 100+ year old pine. Lots of hardware on this one from the heavy duty latches with lid lifts, lid guides, wood protectors along the oak straps, edge protectors, and ornate corner clamps. The trunk is also leather trimmed along the edges and had heavy duty leather straps with the bottom half with buckle being restored. Both interior and exterior pine was scrubbed, lightly sanded along with two coats of spar varnish were applied to provide UV and wood treatment protection. The spar varnish also allows the natural patina and character of the wood grain and metal surfaces to show. Original Lift Out Tray, New 3-ply Leather Handles, Working Lock and Key! |

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
