RARE - HUGE! Nice and Solid 130+ Year Old All Wood Dome Top Antique Trunk! Heavy Duty Nicely Contrasting Hardware Against the Natural Pine Wood Body and Oak Wood Straps. Plenty of Tension in the Front Two Latches Which Have Brass Contrasting Clip. This Dome Top Antique Trunk has LOTs of Character to both the Pine Body and Oak Straps and is Handsomely Restored in A Rich Natural Light Golden Brown Patina with Two Coats of Restorative Spar Varnish Applied Inside and Out.

Original end caps with new leather handles, secret hidden compartment in the Lid, beautifully detailed and original Victorian Lithgraphs of a young lady with a quizzical look/pose and another with a hunter putting a red flower in his lady's hair! The black japanning on the very tops of over 2,000 nail heads (hammered and curved by hand!) securing the hardware onto the wood body and straps was meticulously removed so as to contrast against the black of the hardware and accentuate the wonderful design which these nails have formed. Of note is that some time in the distant past (poss ca 1900) the two original leather securing straps were replaced with two latches. We were able to determine this only after the leather covering was removed revealing the holes made from the nails used to secure the original leather straps. Very Kewl! The applied spar varnish helped to "pop" the design giving it depth. Finally a fantastic dated Brass Lock Patent March 24, 1868! Once cleaned and upon close inspection the polished finish and design on this brass lock gives it the look of a "hologram"! - Working Brass Lock and Key - #279

The Pirate's Lair Exclusive!
We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value.

However the truth of the matter is that the majority of these trunks were made towards the middle to end of the 19th century just at the dawning of the industrial revolution here in America when there were no child labor laws or protections. This rare photo clearly illustrates at least 3 generations of owners and workers, ages appearing to range from pre-teen/adolescent, teens/early adult, through middle to old age!
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown.

Note the adolescent factory workers on top row! Note that there are no women in the photo! This is due to the fact that at that time "proper" women did not work outside of the home, certainly not in a factory. Everybody appears to look pretty stern, having on their arms crossed and "work" faces put on.
