The exterior was covered in a dark brown waterproofed canvas and the interior was lined and covered in a thin newspaper-like paper with a "cross hatch" design print which was in fantastic and rare condition and was able to be saved! The exterior canvas was carefully removed with a solution of bleach and water so as a disinfectant and to remove any remaining horse or fish glue which was used at the time to secure the covering. The interior paper was restored and sealed with a professional paper sealer. The original leather handles and end caps were in poor condition which were replaced. The original lift out tray with matching paper design like the interior was sealed adding to both character and authenticity. Once dried all wood and metal surfaces were lightly hand sanded to bring out the character and patina of the 100+ year old wood and two coats of spar varnish were applied for UV protection, wood preservation, and elegance!
| Large 100 Year Old All Wood Flat top Beautifully Fully Restored with lots of great original hardware touched up in black contrasting with other original brass finished front lock and latches with built-in lid lifts oxidized into a rich dark brown golden patina! MOST rare is that the interior paper lining in a very unique cross-hatch design was able to be completely saved and sealed for additional period authenticity. We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
