Original 4 Small Wheels on the Bottom. The fantastic victorian lithographs on the cover of the liftout tray and under the lid have been professionally sealed. The original leather handles are still usuable and still retain that unique molded grip showing that extra attention to detail when it was first made. Original written ownership on bottom of the trunk in 19th century style script, and a handwritten note transferring owership taped to the inside of the liftout tray cover and dated 1947! If you are looking for a truly unique all original and well preserved small size antique trunk over 130 years old which could be used for jewelry, stationary or other personal articles then this is it!

Also a Handwritten Note is on Inside Cover of Liftout Tray: "This is the trunk nana kept my baby clothes in. She wanted me (mamie) to have it. I am giving it to Martha Frances. Mannie R. Plyfer. March 1947". Handwriting is also found on the Bottom of the Trunk: "MM or MH, Mt. Zion ?????, GA."

Based upon the gift date of 1947 when "Mamie" gave the trunk to "Martha", one can only imagine how old this antique trunk is since it was Mamies grandmother (Nana) that used to keep Mamies baby clothes in it, and apparently Nana had previously bequeathed the trunk to Mamie after her death!! This provenance fits perfectly with the latest date of 1877 found on the lock, easily verifying the trunk being in the very late 1870s or 1880s!

The Pirate's Lair Exclusive!
We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value.

However the truth of the matter is that the majority of these trunks were made towards the middle to end of the 19th century just at the dawning of the industrial revolution here in America when there were no child labor laws or protections. This rare photo clearly illustrates at least 3 generations of owners and workers, ages appearing to range from pre-teen/adolescent, teens/early adult, through middle to old age!
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown.

Note the adolescent factory workers on top row! Note that there are no women in the photo! This is due to the fact that at that time "proper" women did not work outside of the home, certainly not in a factory. Everybody appears to look pretty stern, having on their arms crossed and "work" faces put on.
