We've Only Had 2 of This Extraordinary Type Model Trunk in Over 8 Years and now we have two listed. It is in Fantastic Condition Without a Single Broken or Cracked Oak Slat! Those of You Who Know Antique Trunks and Have Been Searching For that "Special One" This Excelsior Could Be It! Remnants of At least 5 Original Shipping Labels Remain with 1 Being Very Clear and Readable "To: New York" on the "Hamburg-Amerka Linie" Original Restored Lift Out Tray. Working Hidden Compartment in the Lid with the Original Fabric Covering Professionally Sealed. New Leather Handles with the Original End Caps.

Folks, this is it! The trunk you have been waiting for. This fully functional antique trunk has the rare combination of both rarity and beauty. Originally constructed of a thick planked pine body over which was placed individually hand crafted thin wooden oak slats over the entire trunk and secured with heavy duty hardware and wide thick oak slats. The hardware was carefully polished taking off years of oxidation revealing the original brass gilt. Each and every nail head was also carefully polished to provide additional depth and character.

The interior and original lift out tray was covered in a heavy fabric covering which was removed, inside scrubbed with a cleaning solution, dried and then gently hand sanded to reveal the fantastic pine wood grain that only 100+ years of curing can achieve. Remnants of the original covering were sealed and left on the hidden compartment in the lid! The entire trunk then received 2 applications of protective spar varnish to help ensure another 120+ years of service.

The Pirate's Lair Exclusive!
We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value.

However the truth of the matter is that the majority of these trunks were made towards the middle to end of the 19th century just at the dawning of the industrial revolution here in America when there were no child labor laws or protections. This rare photo clearly illustrates at least 3 generations of owners and workers, ages appearing to range from pre-teen/adolescent, teens/early adult, through middle to old age!
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown.

Note the adolescent factory workers on top row! Note that there are no women in the photo! This is due to the fact that at that time "proper" women did not work outside of the home, certainly not in a factory. Everybody appears to look pretty stern, having on their arms crossed and "work" faces put on.
