Almost Too Many Features to List! The original exterior pressed tin filigree design (of plants, flowers and butterfilies), though oxidized was in excellent condition and the detail was brought to life by applying a rich purple acrylic as the base with silver highlighting. Remants of the original gold lacquer were left untouched just on the inside of the trunk for provenance and historical purposes.
All other external hardware was polished and then refreshed in a Black Japanning with the metal clamps being patent date stamped March, 1880! Unfortunately the lock is nonworking. The exterior Oak Wood Slats were lightly sanded to remove 120 Years of grime, japanning, and the old yellowed layers of protective laqueur coating which revealed a beautiful grain only seen on aged 100+ year old wood. These oak slats were then lightly refreshed in a red oak stain.
New metal end caps and leather handles were installed.
Above photos show remnant strips of the original translucent gold laqueur finish on the pressed tin filigree. All/most of this gold laqueur was oxidized away over the 120 years which required a more non-transparent finish. We chose the metallic purple with silver highlighting of the design with the hopes we could achieve in spirit if not in actuality the beauty of this trunk when it was first constructed back in the 1880s-1890s.
| Another One-of-a-Kind Trunk for even the MOST Discerning Antique Collector/Investor, Executive, or Naval Officer! Fantastic All Metal and Wood 120-130 Year Old Antique Dome Top Trunk! Most notable and unique was that the exterior pressed tin filigree of flowers and butterflies was in perfect (though oxidized) condition along with the original Victorian Lithographs and paper covering found on the inside lid, the hidden lid compartment, and the original lift out tray. These Victorian Lithographs are absolutely stunning in their detail with zero loss of color due to fading or damage. The interior paper covering below the liftout trays was removed to reveal the beautiful 120+ year old cured pine wood! The grit, laqueur and black japanning was carefully removed from the exterior oak wood slats, then scrubbed, and lightly sanded to reveal the beautiful oak wood grain. Unfortunately the lock was broken in the distant past, most likely because the key was lost. New leather handles and new end caps were installed. Dated Hardware: March 1880. |

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
