A VERY RARE Small Desktop Size All Wood 19th Century Dome Top Antique Trunk! Originally Made as a "Salesman's Sampler" Marketing Tool was Used to Show an Example of the Type of Large Size Trunks the Company Made, Something to Show Potential Clients. Not Many of These Small Trunks Survived Over the Years, and Rarer Still to Find a Dome Top! Original Lift Out Tray and Patent Dated Front Lockplate March, 1869. Workign Lock AND Key! Trunk #319

The Exterior was originally covered in canvas. The interior and liftout tray were both covered in a thin paper. Both exterior and interior coverings were carefully removed which revealed the beautifully grained and seasoned pine wood body and oak wood slats that only 100+ year old wood can achieve. The hardware was polished and then refreshed in a Black Japanning of Black Oak. The entire trunk was scrubbed with a special cleaning solution, let to dry, and then the pine wood body and oak wood slats were lightly sanded to further reveal the fantastic grain and character of the wood. In the past some repairs were done to the wood, a new front lock latch and chain lid stay were put on, new front leather belts and leather handles replaced the older worn out belts. All hardware was refreshed in a black oak japanning. Working lock but no key. Original end caps were re-installed. Working Lock AND Key!

This small trunk would make for a perfect jewelry or document box easily able to sit on a shelf, small table, desk or dresser.

Small Dome Top Antique Trunk - #319
Fantastic All Wood Desktop Size Antique Dome Top Trunk! Also known as a "Salesman Sampler" this antique trunk would fit perfectly on a Desk, Table, Shelf or Dresser as a Jewelry or Document Box. Exterior was originally covered in canvas and the interior with a thin paper were both removed to reveal the beautiful 100+ year old cured pine wood. The entire trunk was scubbed, dried and lightly sanded with a coat of spar varnish applied. New front latch, new leather handles and front belts replaced the older worn out ones. Has the original liftout tray, original end caps were re-mounted, new leather handles and original end caps.

These small "salesman samplers" are VERY rare as only a few were actually made which were typically given away when they were no longer needed as displays. Rarer still were trunks of this size made all of wood in the dome top style. We only get perhaps one or maybe two of these small dometops a year!!

The Pirate's Lair Exclusive!
We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value.

However the truth of the matter is that the majority of these trunks were made towards the middle to end of the 19th century just at the dawning of the industrial revolution here in America when there were no child labor laws or protections. This rare photo clearly illustrates at least 3 generations of owners and workers, ages appearing to range from pre-teen/adolescent, teens/early adult, through middle to old age!
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown.

Note the adolescent factory workers on top row! Note that there are no women in the photo! This is due to the fact that at that time "proper" women did not work outside of the home, certainly not in a factory. Everybody appears to look pretty stern, having on their arms crossed and "work" faces put on.
