Another VERY RARE Desktop Size All Wood 19th Century FLAT TOP Antique Trunk! Originally Made as a "Salesman's Sampler" Marketing and Sales Tool and was Used to Show as an Example of the Type of Large Size Trunks the Company Made, Something to Show Potential Clients. Not Many of These Small Trunks Survived Over the Years as They Were Typically Given Away as Gifts or Playthings to Young Children! Original "Star" End Caps with New Handles, Original Liftout Tray, Inside Lid Still Retains the Fantatstic Victorian Lithograph Border Design. Beautiful 100+ Year Old Seasoned Pine Wood Body and Oak Straps! Working Lock AND Key! Trunk #323

The Exterior and Interior was originally covered in thin paper. Once the paper coverings were carefully removed the trunk was scrubbed with a cleaning solution, dried, and sanded revealing the beautifully grained and seasoned pine wood body and oak wood slats that only 100+ years can achieve. The hardware was left as is since much of the gold gilt remained!

This small trunk would make for a perfect jewelry or document box easily able to easily sit on a shelf, small table, desk or dresser.

Small Flat Top Antique Trunk - #323
Another fantastic All Wood Small Desktop Size Antique FLAT TOP Trunk! Also known as a "Salesman Sampler" this antique trunk would fit perfectly on a Desk, Table, Shelf or Dresser as a Jewelry or Document Box. Both the exterior and the interior were covered with a thin paper which when removed revealed the beautiful 100+ year old cured pine wood. The entire trunk was scubbed, dried and lightly sanded with a coat of spar varnish applied. Has the Original "star" end caps with new handles, original lift out tray, the fantastic Victorian Lithograph Design was saved and found on the inside lid.

The Pirate's Lair Exclusive!
We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value.

However the truth of the matter is that the majority of these trunks were made towards the middle to end of the 19th century just at the dawning of the industrial revolution here in America when there were no child labor laws or protections. This rare photo clearly illustrates at least 3 generations of owners and workers, ages appearing to range from pre-teen/adolescent, teens/early adult, through middle to old age!
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown.

Note the adolescent factory workers on top row! Note that there are no women in the photo! This is due to the fact that at that time "proper" women did not work outside of the home, certainly not in a factory. Everybody appears to look pretty stern, having on their arms crossed and "work" faces put on.
