Exterior was originally covered in canvas which was removed during restoration, a remnant of this can be found behind the female lock. The interior was covered in a thin paper which was also removed due to over 100 years of deterioration. Hardware was polished and then refreshed in a black japanning. Both exterior and interior surfaces were then scrubbed with a cleaning solution to remove all traces of their coverings and associated glue.
After Scrubbing, like all Antique Trunks here at The Pirates Lair, they were air dried in the sunlight and a Light Sanding was then performed on the Pine Wood Body and Oak Slats Revealed their Ruggedly Handsome Character and Wood Grain! Then 3 Coats of Protective Spar Varnish was applied so as to Preserve both Wood and Metal Hardware. The Spar Varnish also Brought Out the Beauty and Richness of the Wood Grain that only 100+ Years Can Achieve! A Professional Sealing Solution was Applied to the Leather Handles so as to Provide Decades More Use!
New Leather Handles were Added but the Original Iron End Caps were Retained! All in all this 130-140 Year Old Trunk is in excellent condition!
Another Fantastic 19th Century Small Desktop Restoration w/ All Original Features - A well built "Salesmans Sampler" flat top with great character, fantastic hardware, original liftout tray, original leather handles, remnants of original leather tie downs. This fantastic all wood 110-120 Year Old Flat Top Antique Trunk had an exterior covering of green painted canvas and an interior thin paper covering, both were removed during restoration. Once the coverings were removed they revealed the beautiful 100+ year old cured and seasoned pine and oak wood! All exterior and interior pine wood body and oak wood slats were scrubbed, dried, and lightly sanded to reveal the full beauty of the grain and character of the trunk. All the black japanning was carefully cleaned and hardware features polished. The thin paper covering on the original liftout tray was also removed and then the wood was lightly sanded to reveal the fantastic grain of the pine wood. Three applications of spar varnish were applied inside and out with a professional leather sealer and conditioner applied to the leather handles.
