This trunk was a "rescue" found at a local yard sale. The exterior was originally covered in a thick hand tooled leather as were all Jenny Linds of the day. During some past restoration this leather covering was needed to be removed thereby revealing 100+ year old seasoned pine wood which was stained a dark rich mahogany! The interior of the trunk was still half covered with a thin protective paper which which was removed.
The trunk was then scrubbed inside and out, let to dry, the brass button caps on the nails were carefully polished and finally a coat of protective spar varnish was applied to complete the sealing of the wood and metal surfaces.
This restored antique trunk would make for a perfect military or Navy retirement gift re-purposed as a shadowbox to safely display medals, ribbons, flags and then store away photograph albums, uniforms and other keepsakes.
| A Mid 19th Century fully restored antique trunks for sale! Both the exterior tooled leather and the interior paper coverings were removed revealing beautiful 100+ year old cured and seasoned pine planks used in the construction of this trunk. Like all Jenny Linds this trunk has the hallmark "Hour Glass" design reminiscent of the Pirate Chests and Treasure Chests seen on TV and in the movies. Per our custom the entire trunk was scubbed, dried and lightly sanded, then stained with a rich mahogany finish, and lastly with a coat of protective spar varnish being applied. |

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
