Once both the exterior leather covering and interior paper lining were removed the trunk was then scrubbed thoroughly and lightly sanded to further reveal the fantastic grain and character of the wood inside and out. We also found handwriting from the original craftsman on both the lid and bottom planks "4564 40 2681", we have no idea of the meaning. Banding this low profile antique trunk are cast iron edges and slats,
with the head of each and every nail on the entire trunk polished so as to contrast against the black japanning of the iron slats! Beautiful!!
Additionally, remnants of the original brass gilt was found on the hardware after a gentle cleaning and polishing! The contrasting and complimenting between the 100+ year old pine wood, polished nail heads, black iron banding, and hardware gilting makes this antique trunk pop out!
Replacement leather handles were put on in the distant past using the original end caps. Lastly two coats of spar varnish applied to both interior and exterior surfaces.
Of important note is that during restoration the original manufacturers yello lithograph label was able to be saved and professionally sealed! The yellow triangle manufacturer label reads: "P&S - Trunks that Wear Everywhere - Registered Trademark". This company was in the trunk business from the late 1800s to very early 1900s.

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |
