Large 120+ Year Old All Wood and Leather Fully Restored Dome Top Antique Trunk w/ ORIGINAL HAND TOOLED BRUSHED LEATHER in a Rich Original Mahogany Hand Dye Finish, and Fantastic Victorian Lithographs! A Nice and Tight Trunk, Solidly Built w/ Unique Dated Front Latches (July 1873) and All Hardware in Original Black Japanning! Professionally Sealed Original Leather in a Dark Mahogany Patina w/ Hand Tooled Geometric Shapes. New Leather Handles w/ Original High-end Cast Iron End Caps. The Victorian Lithographs Found under the Lid and on the Original Lift Out Tray are Fantastic Perfect Condition and Beautifully Detailed. Working lock, no Key. New leather straps but original cast iron end caps. - #370

Interior and liftout tray were covered in a thin protective paper which was removed, wood was scrubbed, dried and lightly sanded. Lithographs and leather were professionally sealed with 3 coats of sealer. All leather, metal and wood surfaces had two coats of spar varnish applied. The oak wood slats are in original condition and have that fantastic light oak patina which only 120+ years of seasoning can achieve.

The Rarest! 120+ Year Old All Wood Fully Restored Dome Top Antique Trunk with ORIGINAL HAND TOOLED BRUSHED LEATHER EXTERIOR in a rich original mahogany hand dye finish. Solidly Built and Tight with unique front latches dated July 1873. Original lift out tray with BOTH covers in working order complete with Victorian Lithographs and leather tabs. Huge Victorian Lithograph under the entire lid of a Mother and Daughter in beautiful detail. New leather straps but original cast iron end caps. Working lock, no Key. This was a very high end trunk when originally purchased.

The Pirate's Lair Exclusive!
We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value.

However the truth of the matter is that the majority of these trunks were made towards the middle to end of the 19th century just at the dawning of the industrial revolution here in America when there were no child labor laws or protections. This rare photo clearly illustrates at least 3 generations of owners and workers, ages appearing to range from pre-teen/adolescent, teens/early adult, through middle to old age!
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown.

Note the adolescent factory workers on top row! Note that there are no women in the photo! This is due to the fact that at that time "proper" women did not work outside of the home, certainly not in a factory. Everybody appears to look pretty stern, having on their arms crossed and "work" faces put on.
