A Very RARE Beautifully Handsome and Unique HUGE Mid-Late 19th Century Restored Antique "High Arch" Dome Top Trunk by Excelsior Constructed of Individually Handcrafted Exterior Red Oak Slats with a Rich Aged Patina on the Body, Wide Dark Mahogany Exterior Slats w/ Polished Nail Heads, and Thick Pine Planks Used for the Interior! Each Oak Slat was Hand Cut, Sanded, Beveled, Secured, and Perfectly Custom Fit Into Place - An Incredible Feat Given the Tools and Technology Available at the Time, and Even Today! All Heavy Duty Hardware is Still Retains Much of the Original Black Jappaning. Original End Caps with Original Leather Handles. The Interior Wood Grain and 100+ Year Old Patina is Fantastic. Under the Lid are Two Hidden Compartments with Remnants of the Original Canvas-like Cloth Covering AND the Original Passport or Document Pouch!

Working Brass Lock and Key - #489

The interior originally covered in a thin protective canvas like cloth most of which was also removed during restoration. Some remnants were left for historical and cosmetic reasons but 3 coats of a professiional were applied along with a coat of spar varnish. Removing the coverings revealed the beautiful patina which only 130+ year old seasoned pine and oak woods can achieve! All hardware was cleaned, lightly sanded and polished. The exterior and interior woods and hardware were scrubbed and lightly sanded with a high gloss varnish applied to all surfaces. All edge sheeting, hardware clamps, front latches, lid banding, and hinges were lightly polished.

The Pirate's Lair Exclusive!
We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value.

However the truth of the matter is that the majority of these trunks were made towards the middle to end of the 19th century just at the dawning of the industrial revolution here in America when there were no child labor laws or protections. This rare photo clearly illustrates at least 3 generations of owners and workers, ages appearing to range from pre-teen/adolescent, teens/early adult, through middle to old age!
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown.

Note the adolescent factory workers on top row! Note that there are no women in the photo! This is due to the fact that at that time "proper" women did not work outside of the home, certainly not in a factory. Everybody appears to look pretty stern, having on their arms crossed and "work" faces put on.
