Washing Dishes ca 1890's Note the Enamelware Plates and Cups
Note the photo to the left which shows ca 1890-1910 enlisted sailors washing enamelware plates and cups! Also note the M1860 Naval cutlasses placed in a fan ready for use up against the bulkhead!

The sailor whose photo appears on the inside of the cup has had painted his 4 year enlistment dates on the plate 1903-1907. The cup is fixed onto the plate with some sort of glue or adhesive. The rear of the plate has some old glue which may indicate that this plate and bowl were stuck up on a wall.

It is more than quite possible that this plate/cup was hung on the wall of his mother honoring his memory, his service, or both!

While the sailor's name and complete service has been lost to history, quite possibly he sailed on The Great White Fleet cruise around the world, the ribbon on his flat hat reads "USS Buffalo". As such we know that he served aboard that ship for at least part of his 4 year enlistment.

Note that most of these enamelware plates, cups and bowls made for the US Navy ca 1880s-1900's are not bottom marked as to manufacturer. However most recently we were able to obtain a US Navy enamelware bowl which was backmarked "L&G Mfr Co". This was the late 19th century trademark used by the "Lalance & Grosjean Manufacturing Company" which was famouse for its enamelware and kitchen items going back to the days of the Civil War.
