The Flatware is Identified to the Sailor who Used it - George Henry Lerch - Who was Listed on the USS Concord's Crew Manifest as a Carpenters Mate. Handwritten Provenance and Crew Manifest Provided by Mr. George Lerch who was the Grandson of George H. Lerch Who Found the Flatware in his Grandfather's "Navy Box". The handwritten note says that his grandfather was aboard the USS Baltimore at Manila Bay during the Spanish American War. The USS Concord was also at Manila Bay during that battle and it is quite possible the grandson or the family history got confused over time, or perhaps Carpenters Mate Lerch transferred from the Concord to the Baltimore. In either event both ships were at Manila Bay!

Note that most of these enamelware plates, cups and bowls made for the US Navy ca 1890s-1900's are not bottom marked as to manufacturer.
However most recently we were able to obtain a US Navy enamelware bowl which was backmarked "L&G Mfr Co".
This was the late 19th century trademark used by the "Lalance & Grosjean Manufacturing Company" which was famouse for its enamelware and kitchen items going back to the days of the Civil War.
The flatware is stamped "HE" which was the trademark for Holmes & Edwards a 19th century manufacturer (1882-1898) of various types of flatware including "German Silver" (alloy of copper/60, nickel/20 and zinc/20) which is also stamped on one of the pieces. The pattern of flatware was known as Thumbprint or Tipped (ca 1886) and was common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
