This type of enlisted galley Navy tableware and Navy mess deck dinnerware was originally produced only for the U.S. Navy and not available to the general public in the years between the early 1900's through the 1950's, with the majority being produced during WW2.
Produced at the time by the leading manufacturers of fine graniteware pitchers and coffee pots such as The Vollrath Corporation who produced Navy Stainless Steel Ladles, Pots and Pans; The L&G Manufacturing Company, The Carrollton Manufacturing Company.
The U.S. Navy Stainless Steel Forks, Stainless Steel Spoons, Stainless Plates and Bowls, and Stainless Steel Knives were mostly made by Silco, Reed and Barton, Wallco, Stratford Plate, Royal Stainless, WM Rogers, and Meriden. All of the U.S. Navy Graniteware, Enamelware, Stainless Steel Flatware and Pitchers all have the engraved U.S.N either on the handles or on the bottom of the item.
All are authentic, original and actually used by our sailors and seaman while aboard ship from the late 1800's, on the Great White Fleet, and during WW1, WW2, Korea and the Vietnam Wars.

Used by Sailors Aboard US Navy Federal Ships During The Civil War. As typical, the mirror on the inside top cover lid of the soap box has been lost. The metal eye ring used to hang the top inside cover for easy viewing is still intact.
Gutta Percha is a hard plastic latex-like substance derived from a SE Asian tree of the same name. First patented by Goodyear in 1851 and licensed to 100's of other companies for use in electrical insulation, containers such as cups and bowls to hold liquid, and is still used today in dentistry. |
