Above are the reverse and obverse sides of the Model M1833 French Naval Dirk with Scabbard. The dirk was essentially a short sword worn mostly by officers and used in combat with a cutlass and sometimes a boarding ax. Most navies of the world had the dirk as part of its authorized regulation of edged weapons. The dirk was an important piece of personal gear. Later in the latter part of the 19th century it became more of a showpiece of authority as opposed to something to be used in combat.

Note the triangular shape of the blade for a devastating blow leading to a massive internal wound and certain death. This triangular shaped blade was outlawed during WWI by all sides.

The scabbards leather is still in excellent condition and the brass tip has the French Navy's "anchor" poincon.

Like its larger bretheren, the Model M1833 cutlass, this no-nonsense French Dirk was simple yet elegant in both purpose and function.
