The French Naval Cutlass M1833 was the premier naval cutlass for most of the European navies throughout the 19th century and was a prized weapon by the enlisted sailor. This was such a sought after weapon that most navies patterned their cutlasses after this French model. As previously discussed this includes the US Navy which patterned it's Civil War Naval Cutlass the M1860 after this French Naval Cutlass.
This particular French Naval Cutlass without Scabbard being offered for sale has the following attributes: It is tentatively dated on the Juine 1847, however the exact place where the month date is located has been significantly rubbed through polishing and use. While the manufacturing script is clear and distinct this fades away. The original owner stated that decades before the date inscription was clear, Juine 1847 however today it is not. However through some "coaxing" and a lighted magnifying glass along with another similarly dated french cutlass we were just able to make out the date and year.
In any event since the spine is clearly marked "MANUFre Rle de CHATELLERAULT ????" this indicates that the cutlass was made pre-French Revolution.
In addition, on both the reverse and obverse sides of the blade there are the two standard large anchors lightly stamped but clear about 3" down from the ricasso.
The obverse ricasso itself shows two deep and clear naval inspection cartouche or poincons, 1) an oval with a 5 pointed star over the capital letter B which is surrounded on the sides with laurel or leaves and 2) a oblong shield or oval with the capital letter B only.
There is 70-80% of japanning left on the entire steel hilt which at one time had a brass/gold paint covering which was removed, some remnants of this can still be found. On the hilt's inside quillon are the two inspection cartouche or poincon located where they should be but are indistiguishable due to the black japanning. On the outside quillon is an additiional but barely recognizable poincon resembling an X, but we are getting more and more convinced that these cartouche found on the outside of the quillon are actually consistent manufacturing marks.
Additionally on the reverse side of the inside guard parallel to the grip near the edge is found the naval inspection poincon of a small anchor which is consistent in the French pattern and design and for this model M1833 cutlass.
The leather scabbard is not available for this cutlass.
| Excellent Condition. French Naval Anchors on both sides of the blade and stamped on the inside hilt handguard cup. Has all of the appropriate maker marks, cartouche and poincon clear and visible on the blade, visible but not clear on the guard due to the black japanning. |
