The French Naval Cutlass M1833 was the premier naval cutlass for most of the European navies throughout the 19th century and was a prized weapon by the enlisted sailor. This was such a sought after weapon that most navies patterned their cutlasses after this French model. As previously discussed this includes the US Navy which patterned it's Civil War Naval Cutlass the M1860 after this French Naval Cutlass.
This particular French Naval Cutlass with Scabbard being offered for sale has the following attributes: It is dated on the Jain 1842 which is pre-French Revolution and the provenance is clearly written script found on the spine of the blade attests to this, "MANUFre Rle de CHATELLERAULT Jain 1842". In addition, on the blade there are the two standard large anchors lightly stamped but extremely clear on both sides of the blade about 3" down from the ricasso.
The obverse ricasso itself shows two deep and clear naval inspection cartouche or poincons, 1) an oval with a 5 pointed star over the capital letter A which is surrounded on the sides with laurel or leaves and 2) a oblong shield or oval with 5 pointed star over the capital letter W which is surrounded on the sides with laurel or leaves
There is 100% of japanning left on the entire steel hilt. On the hilt's inside quillon are the two inspection cartouche or poincon consisting of 1) an oval with what appears to be a crown over the capital letter A and, 2) another smaller oval which cannot be discerned due to the black japanning. On the outside quillon is is on additiional deep cartouche resembling an X but we are getting more and more convinced that these cartouche found on the outside of the quillon are actually consistent manufacturing marks.
Additionally on the reverse side of the inside guard parallel to the grip is found the naval inspection poincon of a small anchor which is consistent in the French pattern and design for this model M1833 cutlass.
The leather scabbard is somewhat dry yet stable and functional with no loose hardware, rips or tears. The brass tip and throat are held firm in place by their respective staples. The obverse side of the throat has the frog button. There are no maker marks on the obverse side of either the brass throat or tip. On the reverse side of the throat up near the top is a single military naval inspection poincon of a small anchor consistent with the French design and as found on the inside guard.
