RARE! French Naval Cutlass Model M1833 Dated 1847 Pre-French Revolution "Sabre de Bord" Boarding Cutlass #9
Call The Pirate's Lair @ 540-659-6209

french naval cutlass m1833 dated 1847 #9

french naval cutlass m1833 dated 1847 #9

The French Naval Cutlass M1833 was the premier naval cutlass for most of the European navies throughout the 19th century and was a prized weapon by the enlisted sailor. This was such a sought after weapon that most navies patterned their cutlasses after this French model. As previously discussed this includes the US Navy which patterned it's Civil War Naval Cutlass the M1860 after this French Naval Cutlass.

This particular naval cutlass being offered for sale has the following attributes: It is dated 1847 which is pre-French Revolution and the provenance in written script found on the spine of the blade attests to this, "MANUFre Rle de CHATELLERAULT Juine 1847". In addition, on the blade there are the two standard large anchors lightly stamped on both sides of the blade about 3" down from the ricasso. The obverse ricasso itself shows two cartouche or poincons, 1) oval with a crown over the capital letter L and 2) a shield with the capital letter B which is believed to be the arsenal and ordinance inspector poincon of S.F Beaumaretz

There is plenty of japanning left on the inside steel guard and grip, but much of the japanning on the outside cup and D-guard has been removed. On the hilt's inside quillon are the two cartouche consisting of 1) an oval with the numberal 34 and 2) a shield with the capital letter B. On the reverse side of the guard parallel to the grip is the poincon of a small anchor. On the outside quillon is are two additiional cartouche, 1) of an oval with possible numeral 10 and 2) unidentified by deep cartouche.

The scabbard is still supple and very usuable and both the brass tip and throat are held firm. The obverse side of the throat has the poincon of a small anchor above the frog button, and there are no marks on the obverse side of the tip. On the reverse side of the throat are two cartouche, 1) an oval with the capital letter B and 2) an oval with the possible numeral 36.
