The below photographs illustrate a classic example of a mid to late 17th century to early 18th century hunting cuttoe, or naval cutlass worn by Naval Officers as Personal Side Weapons as well as Officers of Privateers and Pirates alike as well documented in "Boarders Away".
The patina on the all brass hilt with bone grip and construction all point to mid 1600's to early 1700's provenance. The inclusion of female nudes and male satyrs frolicing in varying scenes and drinking wine as if in a Bachanalia are carefully hand detailed on all aspects of the hilt.
This certainly indicates that this was made for wear by a rakish fellow, and not for the fine company of gentlemen and ladies out on the town, but certainly something a well-to-do Privateer or Naval officer would wear in the 17th and early 18th Century!
