| This particular fake was not a very good one and was advertised as one of the 300 M1860 naval cutlasses which were issued to U.S. Federal Army during the Civil War. There is no question that this is a fake since the hilt and guard are one piece stamped or molded made to resemble a riveted two piece original. There is no serial number on the guard which they recognized but used this missing and required naval stamp as proof that it was one of the 300 pieces which were issued to the Union Army. |
The blade is almost identical in shape and size to the original Ames M1860 blade with the exception of having no markings on the ricasso. While the hilt and blade are tight, and the leather washer or bushing installed is way too new for being 150 years old. The blade is chromed yet very pitted as can be seen as if someone left this out in the rain and environment so as to allow it to begin rusting and pitting naturally, but there is no way they could ever get rid of the chrome plating. | ![]() Click Photo! |
