RARE! Perfect Example of a Colonial America and Certainly Civil War Confederate Bowie-style Knife Constructed from a Large Rasp or File. Many known examples exist and this is one of them!

Typical Revolutionary War Colonial-era and Civil War Southern Confederate Ingenuity Re-Using What was Available to Make Weapons - Could also double as a plug bayonet and could be carried with or without a leather sheaf on a waist belt!

The southern Alabama family estate from which this was recently purchased stated that this handcrafted bowie knife was purportedly a family military heirloom going back to the Revolutionary War and was later carried by one of the family members during his service with the Confederacy in the Civil War so as to continue its military legacy fighting for freedom and independence.

Whether this homemade bowie knife was indeed made and used during the Rev War is in doubt, however there is no doubt that it is of Civil War vintage and most typical of what was used and carried by Confederate troops.

Possibly also used as a plug bayonet (see pommel) as well as a bowie knife, and perhaps was made to fit into the smooth bore barrel of a musket after it was fired so that infantryman had something to fight as reloading was often impossible and dangerous. The plug bayonet was the forerunner of the socket bayonet. But the plug bayonet was popular and used both in Europe and in the American colonies from the 1650's thru 1750's, certainly during the French Indian War and into the American Revolution.

This particular handcrafted plug bayonet or bowie knife was crudely manufactured from a large hasp or file and was a common enough item found on colonial and certainly confederate troops during the Civil War. The American Colonialist as the Confederate soldier was known to have made weapons quite regularly from re-used items, such as hasp files!

Perfect and typical example of American Revolution-to-Civil War era Handcrafted Bowie Knive from a large rasp file. This type of homemade bowie knife using a large file was commonly found on Confederate soldiers!

16" Total Length, Blade: 10.25". Some pitting and rusting on blade consistent with age and the rasp file impressions left in the steel can still be clearly seen. Previous owners stated that this family heirloom was made and used by a family member during the American Revolution and later used by another family member while in the Confederate service during the Civil War.

The plug bayonet was made to fit into a musket after it was fired so that the naval or ground infantry had something to fight with since reloading was often impossible and dangerous. The plug bayonet was the forerunner of the socket bayonet and was used both in Europe and in the American colonies from the 1650's thru 1750's.

One often sees pirates and sailors and infantry also holding a plug bayhone as a knife or cutting tool in one hand with a boarding ax in another as they were used in conjunction with each other when boarding a naval vessel during a battle. The boarding as was used to clear ones own deck of debris including ropes and rigging which may have been shot away and fallen as well as digging hot shot out of wooden hulls, bridges, railings, decks, sails, etc etc.

The plug bayonet as an offensive weapon was used to help a boarder climb up the side of an enemies wooden hull, then used to chop away at their rigging making it difficult or impossible for them to properly maneuver, and then to used as a personal weapon in close quarter combat. The boarding ax was also used to throw at an enemy to keep distance. In fact it has been said that a well thrown boarding ax was even more lethal than an early 19th century gun (both were equally only one shot!)
