Above are photos of the Type II US Navy Boarding Ax with ball butt currently in the collection of The Pirates Lair. The Type II American Boarding Ax had the side langets integral to the socket and an iron wedge was inserted into the wooden handle at the socket.

Above are closeups of the single tooth cut into the blade of the Type II boarding ax.
Note the iron wedge which can clearly be seen hammered into the end of the wooden haft to help secure the ax head onto the socket.
Above photo shows the monogram "US" stamped onto the reverse side of the ax blade in a serif font.
