Royal Canadian Navy Admiralty Coffee Cup found in Canada illustrates this British Commonwealths use of a 16th Century insignia adopted by the British Royal Navy and Admiralty known as the Naval Badge or Admiralty Crown!
This Naval Badge consists of a Royal Crown with a base of precious jewels and stones with the top depicting sails in positions 2 and 4, with the rear of a ship in position 3, and port and starboard "half ships" in positions 1 and 5.
The supposed legend behind the British Naval Badge is that it represents the diminuitive British Royal Navy when it went up against a much superior invading Spanish Armada in 1588. The rear view of the ships represent the much larger Spanish ships and fleet, while the single sails represent the smaller British ships sailing between them.
On British Royal Navy dinnerware one will find either the Naval Badge as shown above or the particular reigning Monarchs Royal Crown when the dinnerware was made.
Backstamp indicating that the dinner cup was made ca 2007 for the Royal Canadian Navy by Steelite International founded in 1985 Stoke-on-Trent, England. Note that there is no Royal Navy proof or arsenal marks which are no longer required under British law.
Beautiful white glazed cup with blue and gold stripes and the British Royal Navy's Admiralty Crown or Naval Badge in Gold. |
